Guide to Buy Hendrick’s Gin Online

Hendrick’s Gin is a popular choice of liquor for many Singaporeans who are fans of the famous cocktail – gin and tonic. Light, refreshing and thirst-quenching, what is there not to love about this cocktail? But have you tried anything other than the original Hendrick’s Gin crafted from eleven delicate botanicals?

The original Hendrick’s Gin might be the go-to gin under the brand, but why not give the other gins a shot too? Who knows, you might just add another bottle of gin to your list of favourites. Read on for a comprehensive list of Hendrick’s gin for your next weekend soiree.

The Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice

The Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice Gin celebrates nature’s most vivid blooms packed in a bottle. It is infused with natural flavours and floral essences post-distillation, and its tasting notes are sweet and extremely fruity on the nose. The aroma begins with raspberries, roses and strawberries. You will taste lavender, strawberry and rose hips early on the palate and a spicy hit of sandalwood and pine mid-palate. At the same time, the fruit notes become drier and take on the flavour of prickly pear fruit and dragonfruit. It finishes with gentle spice, mild pine and leaves your palate fresh.

Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice is a small batch, limited edition bottle of gin from Hendrick’s Gin. The brand likens it to a fleeting holiday romance with the lifespan of a mayfly. Grab this exclusive gin before it is gone forever.

How to Enjoy It

Experience the beauty of Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice in a Midsummer Spritz – a zesty concoction of elderflowers with a zip of soda and fresh cucumber. Simply mix 50ml of Hendrick’s Midsummer Solstice, 50ml sparkling wine and 150ml tonic water with ice and garnish with an orange and cucumber slice.

The Hendrick’s Lunar

Deeply floral and richly aromatic, the Hendrick’s Lunar Gin is an intriguing combination of the refreshing and the warm, specially crafted to be savoured on a special evening watching the sun go down and admiring the moon charge the sky – perfect for a night of slow drinking and nice conversations.

Hendrick’s Lunar creator Lesley Gracie describes this special bottle as one with “rich aroma of night-scented flowers with a background of a refreshing burst of citrus.”

Its nose is softly peppery with hints of lavender, hibiscus and rose, staying true to the botanical gin branding. The palate is spicy with mellow juniper, lemongrass and rosewater and a touch of orange in the background. It finishes vanilla, orange and lemongrass.

How to Enjoy It

You will be happy to hear that you can enjoy Hendrick’s Lunar simply in a Gin and Tonic like you are used to. Thoroughly combine 50ml of Hendrick’s Lunar and 150ml of tonic water on ice, then garnish with a twist of black pepper and cucumber slices.

Hendrick’s Orbium

According to Hendrick’s, this is what Hendrick’s Gin would taste like in a parallel universe. The gin is a reimagination of the original Hendrick’s Gin, instilled with additional extracts of quinine, wormwood and blue lotus blossom and the result? An exquisite gin that sits roundly on the palate.

While Hendrick’s Orbium is distilled the same way as the original Hendrick’s Gin, the brand took it in another direction by infusing flavours found in tonic and vermouth plus a touch of blue lotus blossom which balances the overall taste. The trinity of essences creates a complex gin with surprising brightness and a long finish, evolving from floral into a deep and alluring bitter note.

How to Enjoy It

If you are one to enjoy a tipple of martini, you will be glad to find out that the Hendrick’s Orbium Gin works perfectly in one. Simply combine 60ml of Hendrick’s Orbium and 3ml of dry vermouth with ice, strain into a cocktail glass and garnish the cocktail with lemon zest and cucumber slices.

Whiskey 101 | What Should a Beginner Drink?

You might not know much about whiskeys, but we can all agree that the one thing the whiskey world promises is exclusivity and bountiful mysteries. As an amateur you might be thinking – which whiskey should I start with? How does good whiskey taste? How to drink whiskey? Should I drink it neat (unchilled) or on the rocks? Read on for a list of exquisite starter whiskeys and answers to your burning questions about all things whiskey.

First things first, some technical terms to note before we dive into our whiskey recommendations:

  • Tasting notes – Evaluation of the whiskey which includes a sensory examination (taste, smell and colour)
  • Finish – how long you can taste the whiskey and its texture
  • Body – the way a whiskey feels in your mouth (a whiskey that floods your mouth with flavour immediately would be described as “having a lot of body”)

1. Blended Malt – Jameson Irish Whiskey

Jameson Irish Whiskey

Originating from Ireland, the Jameson Irish Whiskey’s flavour stems from a unique mixture of a single pot still whiskey from malted and unmalted, or green, barley, and a grain whiskey. With a triple distillation process, a minimum of four years of ageing in an oak cask, naturally smooth and mellow finish and absence of smoky flavours make this whiskey perfect for a rookie dipping his or her toes into whiskey tasting.

If you are not used to tasting whiskey neat and are wondering what to mix with whiskey, simply mix one part Jameson with two parts Ginger Ale for a refreshing cocktail or add it to coffee for a cuppa authentic Irish Coffee.

Bourbon – Bulleit Bourbon

Bulleit Bourbon

Bourbon is a great option for budding whiskey enthusiasts as it encompasses a sweeter tasting profile and flavours that are more prominent on the palate.

The Bulleit Bourbon is inspired by the whiskey pioneered by Augustus Bulleit over 150 years ago. Made with ingredients of the highest quality, the subtlety and complexity of this particular bourbon are derived from its unique blend of rye, corn, barley malt, special strains of yeast and pure Kentucky limestone-filtered water. Its tasting notes feature gentle spiciness and sweet oak aromas along with a smooth mid-palate with tones of maple, oaks and nutmeg. The finish is long, dry and satiny with a light toffee flavour.

Enjoy it neat, or add a splash of water to the whiskey to “open up” its aroma.

Single Malt – Bruichladdich Black Art 6.1

Bruichladdich Black Art 6.1

Claimed to bring you on a spiritual journey, the Bruichladdich Black Art 6.1 comes with a polished walnut tasting note with a richness of the oak and fruit. On your second sip, you can expect to taste dark fruits, date, fig, raisin, chocolate, crystallised ginger and floral red rose. The taste of this whiskey is difficult to grasp as it changes dramatically with every layer and each one adds to the mystery of its creation process. Choose the Bruichladdich Black Art 6.1 for an immeasurable whiskey-tasting journey.

It is recommended to taste your whisky neat first, and then add a little spring water with your second sip. Combine the whisky and water by gently shaking the glass.

Single Malt Scotch  – Glenfiddich 18 Years

Glenfiddich 18 Years

The Glenfiddich 18 is a truly exceptional single malt scotch whiskey, it is the result of 18 years of care and attention, along with impeccable whiskey-making craftsmanship and knowledge passed down through the generations of descendants. In fact, it is one of the last family distilleries still running since 1886 in Scotland.

This single malt scotch is matured with Spanish Oloroso wood and American oak, which brings fruity and robust oak expression. Additionally, every batch is individually numbered and carefully looked after, ensuring a warming and distinguished finish.

You can enjoy this glass of whiskey the same way you would a single malt.

5 Facts About Chivas Regal

Chivas Regal, the go-to liquor amongst frequent visitors of clubs, bars and pubs in Singapore. So much so that it has become the staple blended whisky at certain local watering holes. But how much do people actually know about Chivas Regal? Read on for some interesting facts about your favourite whisky brand and share them with your friends over drinks next time!

1. Its Rich History

You might not believe this, but the world-renown Chivas Regal, originally named Chivas Brothers, was founded in 1801 by a pair of brothers who used to be grocers in Aberdeen, Scotland. But it wasn’t until the 1900s that the export market for whisky from Scotland soared. Business was abruptly disrupted by World War I, and just as business picked up thereafter, World War II began. The brothers passed away, and the brand eventually landed in the hands of Seagram, a Canadian whisky distiller in 1949.

With the global supply chain of Seagram, Chivas Regal was able to be exported to a total of 35 countries in 1960 and sell a total of 100 000 cases a year. Demand for the blended whisky rocketed, and the brand grew to sell 1.2 million cases of whisky a year by 1970.

The crowd favourite Chivas Regal 18 Year Old was then launched in 1997, and the brand was acquired by French alcoholic beverage company Pernod Ricard four years later. A full range of limited edition and market exclusives have been introduced since then, and the brand sells up to 4 million cases of whisky per year now.

2. Its Taste

If you haven’t tasted a glass of Chivas Regal before, you are going to want to know this.

Chivas Regal 12

Smooth and generous, a blend of the finest malt and grain whiskies matured for at least 12 years. Its tasting notes are round and creamy with a full, rich taste of honey and ripe pears, with vanilla, hazelnut and butterscotch notes. Its finish is rich and lingering, while the nose is an aromatic infusion of wild herbs, honey and orchard fruits.

Chivas Regal 18

Complexed and refined, the Chivas Regal 18 is an incredible blend of 85 flavour notes in every drop. Perfectly balanced, exceptionally smooth – velvety with hints of dark chocolate and aromas of dried fruit and buttery toffee. Taste its mellow smokiness and experience its warm and long finish.

3. Where It Is Produced

Chivas Regal is produced at Strathisla Distillery located in Speyside, (surprise, surprise) Scotland – home of the Scotch. Strathisla is, in fact, the oldest working distillery in the Highlands, which produced its very first batch of whisky in 1786. In fact, the Strathisla single malt is the core malt whisky in all Chivas Regal blends.

4. How to Enjoy It

There are many ways to enjoy an excellent glass of whisky. Having it on the rocks isn’t the only option.

Highball

A refreshing cocktail popularised by the working class adults of Japan, this concoction involves a glass of well-mixed ice-cold Ginger Ale, sparkling water or soda water and whisky.

With Water

A splash of water to your Chivas Regal 18 can open up the whisky and bring forth flavours that would have otherwise been masked by the strong alcohol taste on your tongue. Water will also allow the glass of scotch to blossom, resulting in a smoother finish.

Old Fashioned

If you prefer to have it in a classic cocktail that isn’t too fancy, order an Old Fashioned at your favourite bar. With the simple combination of water, sugar and some bitters, you can expect a subtly sweet taste that still packs a punch.

5. Where to Get It

Chivas Regal whisky can be found at almost all alcohol retailers in Singapore and most bars, but did you know that you can buy them online at JARBARLAR too? Instead of carrying bottles of liquor back home from the mall, you can simply order online from the comfort of your own home at cheap prices and get it delivered to your doorstep. Plus, you will be entitled to free delivery as long as you hit the minimum spend of $50.

Ballantine Blended Scotch Whisky and its History

The lineage of Ballantine’s Scotch Whisky can be traced back to 1827, when a young 19-year-old George Ballantine, after apprenticing five years as a grocer, sets up a tiny grocery store in Edinburgh supplying a range of whiskies. Nine years later in 1836, George shifted his focus towards the art of ageing whiskies, using quality, hand-selected malts. Expanding operations, George also opened a bigger Ballentine’s shop with a new grocery store in South Bridge. Within half a century, Ballantine’s shops and warehouses export Ballantine’s blended whisky to a worldwide market. George Ballentine retires and his two sons take the reins of the family business in 1988.

Not long after, George Ballentine passes on. While his body shuffles off this mortal coil, his legacy lives on forever imprinted in the pages of history. The proof of which comes in 1895, when Ballantine’s was awarded a Royal Warrant by Her Late Majesty Queen Victoria. Talk about a royal seal of approval indeed.

Signature Bottles

Ballantine’s Finest

Pioneered in 1910, The Ballantine’s Finest is the brand’s signature bottle. Voted the world’s best-blended scotch in 2020 and consistently topping the charts in terms of sales in Europe, this drink lives up to the hype. A light gold colour, The Ballantine’s Finest boasts soft and elegant heath honey notes with hints of spice. On the palette, it is a balance of subtle sweet flavours such as milk chocolate, red apple, and vanilla. An exquisite fresh and floral after-taste creates a rounded glow on the finish, making this bottle highly recommended for experienced and novice blended whisky fans alike.

Ballantine’s 12 Year

Compared to the no-age-statement Ballantine’s Finest, the Ballantine 12 year is the company’s hallmark aged bottle. While the former is a blend of different whiskies aged at least 3 years, the latter is a blend of whiskies aged for a minimum of 12 years. Made with a passion for whisky, for those with a passion for whisky – the Ballantine’s 12 is a honey-sweet whisky perfectly balanced with oak and vanilla notes. Visually rich with its golden honey tones, the 12-year-old Ballantine hits similar notes of honey with hints of oak and vanilla. Initial sips present complex honey and floral flavours, with a creamy oak sweetness, which soon give way to long-lasting and refreshing after tones. The additional years spent ageing deepens the already outstanding flavours Ballantine’s is known for, providing a much more complex tasting experience for any whisky aficionado.

Ballantine’s 21 Year

Introduced in 1993, Ballantine’s 21-Year-Old Scotch Whisky is the cream of the crop as far as buying off the shelf goes. Intense and rich, complemented by smooth spice – its flavour is derived from a high proportion of whiskies aged twenty-one years and matured in European Oak casks. Visually deviating from its younger cousins in tone, the Ballantine’s 21-Year-Old sports a more reddish hue as a result of extended ageing. When inhaled, the spirit blooms richly, with honey-sweet undertones and hints of apple and floral aromas. Additional years in the barrel have also benefited the flavours within the whisky, bringing forth a delicate balance of rich liquorice and aromatic spice. Ending on subtle and mellow notes of dried fruit, the Ballantine’s 21 Year Old leaves one wanting more after every sip.

Between the three signature Ballantine bottles, there’s an entry point for newcomers and enthusiasts alike. Steeped in rich history and tradition, there’s little doubt why Ballantine’s has become a staple of the Scottish Whisky industry through the centuries.

The Glenfiddich Story

In the summer of 1886, founder William Grant set out to fulfil a lifelong ambition. Supported and aided by his seven sons and two daughters, they began building his distillery by hand. Literally. Stone after stone, the family toiled for a year tirelessly till the structure’s completion. Naming it Glenfiddich, Gaelic for Valley of the Deer, the iconic stag would later be forever emblazoned front and centre of every bottle produced.

Water, air, and malted barley – a trinity of ingredients expertly crafted and refined to perfection before being bottled as the golden amber known as Glenfiddich whisky. So inspirational was the distillery that in 1961, 20th-century German designer Hans Schelger was motivated to develop the triangular bottle design we’ve come to know and love today. Once considered radical and wayward, the eye-catching tri-tripped bottle now adorns the shelves of cocktail bars in Singapore and worldwide.

One of the first brands actively promoted outside of Scotland in 1963, global consumers of the time accustomed to drinking blended whisky was immediately taken aback at the delights of the single malt brand. All credit goes to Sandy Grant Gordon, great-grandson of founder William, for advocating this international shift.

Never one to rest on their laurels, the Glenfiddich distillery went on to pioneer the Solera Vat in 1998. Through a revolutionary process of backfilling barrels and continuously ageing their contents, Glenfiddich elevated the notion of age-statements in whisky across the industry, a technique that is still used today by the Speyside distillery.

In 2001, Glenfiddich released the oldest bottle of Single Malt Scotch ever recorded. Bottled 64 years ago in 1937, it is rumoured that only 61 bottles remain from the original batch derived from Cask 843. Ten separate Warehouse Masters watched this cask bloom into the pinnacle of Single Malt Scotch, a true testament to the commitment of Glenfiddich in quality distillation.

Fast forward to 2021, despite the COVID-19 pandemic Glenfiddich has decidedly surfed on the wave that is social distancing measures. Understanding the shift towards home dining and smaller group gatherings, the dynamic brand has supported local efforts in Singapore via virtual events such as the 1887 Virtual Bar. Matching dollar for dollar donations, Glenfiddich has solidified its position as a cornerstone of the whisky and F&B industry in Singapore.

Signature Bottles

Continuing down our path of history, let’s take a look at some of the more unique bottles released by Glenfiddich past and present.

First off, we have the Glenfiddich 18 Year Old. One of their core bottles, uniquely matured in a cask made out of Spanish Oloroso Wood and American Oak to lend a rich, fruity, and robust oak flavour to the spirit.

Visually dark gold in colour, the first thing that hits you when you pour a dram of Glenfiddich 18 Year is the remarkably rich nose of ripe orchard fruit, baked apple, and robust oak. Complex in flavour, this whisky hits tasting notes of luxurious dried fruit, candy peel, and dates. The finish itself is as distinguished on the palette, with a warm and rewarding end to the tasting experience. As we alluded to earlier, this is one of Glenfiddich’s core bottles and is available year-round, making it the perfect drink to stock at home and savour.

A little more special is the Glenfiddich 50 Year Old. Only on its second vatting, this is one of the oldest and finest whiskies available. Only 50 bottles of this single malt Scotch is released annually, making it a treat for anyone who gets their hands on it. Sporting a pale gold hue, this whisky possesses a beautiful and harmoniously complex aroma with whiffs of delicate rose petals and violets, intertwined with green tobacco leaf, oak, and faint hints of smoke. When tasted, the 50 Year is initially sweet with hints of zesty orange marmalade and vanilla toffee, slowly cascading into floral-fruity undertones before ending with silky oak tannins and gentle smoke. As expected, the finish is exceptionally long with traces of oak and peat lingering in the mouth.

Lastly, a bottle for whisky collectors and cult Glenfiddich fans worldwide – the Glenfiddich Ultimate. Aged to 38 years old, each bottle of the Glenfiddich Ultimate comes in a special ornate decanter with an intricately cut crystal stopper, accompanied by a brass identification card. Only available in selected outlets, this bottle embodies the pinnacle of whisky distilling. Rich gold in colour, the Glenfiddich Ultimate carries vibrant oak notes with a rich vanilla toffee aroma, with delicate floral character and fruits presenting over time. When sampled, there is a woody spiciness from the sherry butts that are complemented by layers of creamy bourbon and rich caramelised fruits. Finishing on a velvety and memorable sweetness, this bottle is one to savour and treasure over time.

Is Your Beer Past Its Prime? Understanding Beer Expiry and How to Prevent It

Beer enthusiasts know that the taste, aroma, and freshness of their favorite brews are crucial to enjoying a satisfying pint. But have you ever wondered if beer can actually expire? In this blog post, we’ll delve into the fascinating world of beer expiry, exploring why it happens, how to identify it, and what you can do to prevent it. So grab a cold one and let’s dive in!

  1. Understanding Beer Expiry: Beer is a perishable product, and just like any other consumable, it has a limited shelf life. While beer doesn’t have a fixed expiration date like milk or certain food items, it can go bad over time due to various factors. The freshness of beer is influenced by its ingredients, brewing process, packaging, and storage conditions.

  2. Signs of Expired Beer: To determine if your beer has expired, pay attention to the following signs: a) Off flavors and aromas: Stale, cardboard-like, or skunky smells and tastes can indicate beer spoilage. b) Altered appearance: Cloudiness, excessive sediment, or unusual color changes may indicate the beer is past its prime. c) Carbonation loss: Flat beer with little to no carbonation suggests deterioration.

  3. Factors Affecting Beer Shelf Life: a) Ingredients: Quality ingredients and careful brewing techniques can extend the shelf life of beer. b) Packaging: Bottles and cans that effectively block out light and prevent oxygen exposure help maintain beer freshness. c) Storage conditions: Exposure to heat, light, and fluctuations in temperature can accelerate the aging process, causing beer to spoil faster.

  4. Preventing Beer Spoilage: a) Store beer in a cool, dark place: Keep your beer away from direct sunlight and fluctuating temperatures. A dark and cool cellar or refrigerator is ideal for preserving its flavor. b) Handle with care: Avoid excessive shaking or agitation, as it can lead to unwanted chemical reactions and the formation of off flavors. c) Consume fresh beers first: If you have a collection of beers, prioritize consuming the ones with shorter shelf lives to ensure maximum freshness. d) Check dates and labels: While beer may not have an explicit expiration date, check for “brewed on” or “best by” dates. Opt for beers with recent production dates for the best quality.

Conclusion: Beer expiry is a real phenomenon that can affect the taste and enjoyment of your favorite brews. By understanding the factors that contribute to beer spoilage and following proper storage practices, you can ensure your beer stays fresh for longer. Remember, a little care goes a long way in preserving the flavors and quality of your beloved beverages. So, the next time you crack open a cold one, savor the freshness and cheers to a delightful drinking experience!
