5 Facts About Chivas Regal

Chivas Regal, the go-to liquor amongst frequent visitors of clubs, bars and pubs in Singapore. So much so that it has become the staple blended whiskyat certain local watering holes. But how much do people actually know about Chivas Regal? Read on for some interesting facts about your favourite whisky brand and share them with your friends over drinks next time!

1. Its Rich History

You might not believe this, but the world-renown Chivas Regal, originally named Chivas Brothers, was founded in 1801 by a pair of brothers who used to be grocers in Aberdeen, Scotland. But it wasn’t until the 1900s that the export market for whisky from Scotland soared. Business was abruptly disrupted by World War I, and just as business picked up thereafter, World War II began. The brothers passed away, and the brand eventually landed in the hands of Seagram, a Canadian whisky distiller in 1949.

With the global supply chain of Seagram, Chivas Regal was able to be exported to a total of 35 countries in 1960 and sell a total of 100 000 cases a year. Demand for the blended whisky rocketed, and the brand grew to sell 1.2 million cases of whisky a year by 1970.

The crowd favourite Chivas Regal 18 Year Old was then launched in 1997, and the brand was acquired by French alcoholic beverage company Pernod Ricard four years later. A full range of limited edition and market exclusives have been introduced since then, and the brand sells up to 4 million cases of whisky per year now.

2. Its Taste

If you haven’t tasted a glass of Chivas Regal before, you are going to want to know this.

Chivas Regal 12

Smooth and generous, a blend of the finest malt and grain whiskies matured for at least 12 years. Its tasting notes are round and creamy with a full, rich taste of honey and ripe pears, with vanilla, hazelnut and butterscotch notes. Its finish is rich and lingering, while the nose is an aromatic infusion of wild herbs, honey and orchard fruits.

Chivas Regal 18

Complexed and refined, the Chivas Regal 18 is an incredible blend of 85 flavour notes in every drop. Perfectly balanced, exceptionally smooth – velvety with hints of dark chocolate and aromas of dried fruit and buttery toffee. Taste its mellow smokiness and experience its warm and long finish.

3. Where It Is Produced

Chivas Regal is produced at Strathisla Distillery located in Speyside, (surprise, surprise) Scotland – home of the Scotch. Strathisla is, in fact, the oldest working distillery in the Highlands, which produced its very first batch of whisky in 1786. In fact, the Strathisla single malt is the core malt whisky in all Chivas Regal blends.

4. How to Enjoy It

There are many ways to enjoy an excellent glass of whisky. Having it on the rocks isn’t the only option.

Highball

A refreshing cocktail popularised by the working class adults of Japan, this concoction involves a glass of well-mixed ice-cold Ginger Ale, sparkling water or soda water and whisky.

With Water

A splash of water to your Chivas Regal 18 can open up the whisky and bring forth flavours that would have otherwise been masked by the strong alcohol taste on your tongue. Water will also allow the glass of scotch to blossom, resulting in a smoother finish.

Old Fashioned

If you prefer to have it in a classic cocktail that isn’t too fancy, order an Old Fashioned at your favourite bar. With the simple combination of water, sugar and some bitters, you can expect a subtly sweet taste that still packs a punch.

5. Where to Get It

Chivas Regal whisky can be found at almost all alcohol retailers in Singapore and most bars, but did you know that you can buy them online at JARBARLAR too? Emulate Vacation Vibes with These Rum Cocktails

Even if you can’t go on holiday, there is no reason to dial the festivities down. Everyone loves a good cocktail – you may have your favourites, but today we’re putting the spotlight on well-loved concoctions featuring rum! No matter where you’re at with your rum repertoire, our guide will equip you with tips and tricks.

Rum Cocktails

A little bit about rum

One of the more diverse and varied spirits, you can use rum in a myriad of ways. Rum is a great starter spirit to bake with – from rum raisin banana bread to belgian waffles with caramelised rum syrup. Besides booze-soaked desserts, you can also cook with it. Dark rum will add flavour to dishes, but when cooked, the alcohol will burn off. Light rum will still give you the taste of alcohol, a much more flavourful choice for dishes, in small uses.

Although perfect for cocktails, rum can also be enjoyed straight. Here’s the lowdown on our favourites.

1. Piña Colada

Piña Colada

Nothing screams vacation mode like a tropical Piña Colada, plus it’s incredibly easy to make!

A deliciously creamy blend of Malibu rum, pineapple juice, and coconut cream, this refreshing and sweet cocktail is a crowd-pleaser. You’ll need:

  • 50ml of Malibu rum
  • 75ml pineapple juice
  • 25ml coconut cream

Pour everything into a shaker with ice, shake well, pour and enjoy! It’s that easy. Garnish with a slice of pineapple or maraschino cherries.

2. Cuba Libre

Cuba Libre

Coke, rum, and lime. Three ingredients for one of the most popular drinks of all time – also a Cuban favourite.

We recommend the Bacardi Superior for its light and crisp flavour. It’ll complement the rich profile of the Coke. You’ll need:

  • 1 ounce rum
  • 3 ounces Coke
  • Several lime wedges

Pour the rum and coke in a glass with ice. Garnish with a wedge of lime. Perfect cocktail for dinner parties!

3. Daiquiri

Daiquiri

Created around the same time as the Cuba Libre, the Daiquiri comes in all shapes and forms. A three-ingredient classic, the Daiquiri blends the sweetness of the rum with sugar and fresh lime. The best rum to use for this recipe include the Bacardi Superior, Ron Diplomatico Blanco, and Rhum Barbancourt.

You’ll need:

  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • ¾ ounce demerara sugar syrup
  • Lime twist for garnish

Shake the rum, lime juice, and demerara sugar syrup with ice until well-chilled. After straining it into a chilled coupe, garnish it with a lime twist and enjoy!

4. Eggnog

Eggnog

headliner for holiday parties, the eggnog recipe is one that’s versatile and packs a punch. You’ll need:

  • 12 eggs, separated
  • 3 cups of white sugar, divided
  • 16 ounces dark rum
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream

To prepare, mix egg yolks, sugar, rum, and nutmeg to ‘cure’ overnight in your refrigerator. The next day, you can beat the egg whites and remaining sugar with an electric mixer until peaks form. Fold in the egg yolk mixture and in heavy cream. Pour into lidded jars, refrigerate and shake before serving. The Sailor Jerry Rum is perfect for this.

5. Mai Tai

Mai Tai

Everyone’s heard of this one! The inclusion of lime juice and orange liqueur is testament to its summery vibes. You’ll need:

  • 45ml white rum
  • 25ml Cointreau liqueur
  • 25ml fresh lime juice
  • 15ml almond syrup
  • 50ml orange juice
  • 15ml dark rum
  • Pineapple slices

Shake a combination of white rum, Cointreau, lime juice, and syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice until well-chilled. Strain into a glass with crushed ice and top off with dark rum. We like Captain Morgan Dark Rum for this. Garnish with a pineapple slice.
